Majority of enterprises have realised the power of social media collaboration within the organisation, as well as with partners and clients. But, it is important to manage these workstreams such that they are within corporate compliance and security policy guidelines.

There was a similar debate in the 90s when email became popular with enterprises. Now, corporate email policies are applied to manage access, content, archiving, compliance and security functions like SPAM control, anti-virus, URL filtering etc.

I am currently working in this space and there has been a lot of interest from enterprises. If anybody wants to discuss issues around this, happy to help.

John,
Very good point. Nothing will end well without the blessing of the corporate attorneys and Senior Management. Also, the larger the enterprise, the more likely you have powerful silos that can't agree on policy and procedures. Often takes a brave social media advocate to go in and set the tone, then buy-in from the very top to make things happen.

That's right, John. Again, this is similar to the time when every business had to have a dot com presence. But, now it is passé and people have stopped worrying about having a web presence and the technology (and controls) are a lot more mature.

Corporate IT has always been keen on introducing social media in business (they were the first to start using Twitter). With senior management beginning to understand the importance of this, there is some movement.
