Crowdsourcing, Another Word for Managing by Committee?

 

I found this great video by Marty Clarke from a couple of years ago, and I wanted to share it first, then throw in my 2 cents. The basic premise, managing by committee sucks. Nothing gets accomplished. You want to make progress, be a leader and make the decision yourself.

I'm going to roll this ahead to current day and talk about "crowdsourcing". That's the new buzz word for focus groups, design by the public, and yes, managing by committee. The key point of the video is that it's fine to collect everybody's opinion or create a poll, but the decision needs to be made by the senior stakeholder and noone else. There is only one "say" in the decision and that's the boss' say. Without this, there is anarchy and indecision. Not that I admire dictators, but you have to admit, they get the job done. Crowdsourcing is great for collecting data, but it's no substitute for leadership.

So when you're sitting down with your team and going around the room, listen to their advice, but don't tip your hand. They will be more likely to give it to you straight if they know it's up to you to decide. Thank them for their opinions and usher them out of the room. They can wait for you to decide.

Crowdsourcing as I understand it, is not about decision making, it is more about utilizing untapped and available resources to accomplish a goal. The challenge with this, is that if you are in an organization that utilizes crowd sourcing, and offer your services to assist a colleague, the impression will be that you aren't busy enough. And that's not a good impression to leave with a boss.  
 
Leadership is different, and as the Army went from "Mission, Men, then Me", to "Men, Mission, then Me", missions were accomplished more efficiently. Modern organizations are mostly matrix structured, where leaders lead teams of people they have no direct authority over. In this culture, one must lead by getting input, letting people feel a sense of ownership, and then getting things done. If you don't utilize this method, you will be the victim of an "organizational T-cell response", and be out of work. Better to be liked than be effective, or at least know where on the continuum the culture in the organization functions best.

I agree that the wiki definition of crowdsourcing is more about outsourcing tasks to a group, but decision making is also a task, and that is often outsourced to a group as well, or at least opinions are collected in advance of a decision. Any management system breaks down when there is no consensus, i.e. no leader making decisions.  
 
I left big business long ago because we were starting that matrix structure and I hated it. It's human nature to be either a follower or a leader. When you empower the followers at the expense of the leader, you get chaos or you get nothing, nothing gets accomplished. Leaders should get input and spread ownership to their best followers, but that's not the same thing as making important decisions. A good leader knows which decisions need to kept close and those which are ok to outsource. Crowdsourcing important decisions is senseless.
